Canadian Bassist and Record Producer Stu Brooks is at the fore-front of pioneering original sounds and styles, which are both instantly recognizable and sonically untouchable. Because of his creative approach, Stu is often the first called on to play bass, write songs and produce tracks for multiple platinum records by artists including 50 Cent, Mobb Deep, Tony Yayo, Young Buck, Matisyahu, Norah Jones, Rhazel (The Roots), Z-Trip, Dan the Automator, Bebel Gilberto, Peeping Tom, and more.
As a member of the powerful and versatile rhythm section Dub Trio, Stu has worked closely with Lady Gaga, Faith No More’s Mike Patton, Mary J. Blige, Tupac Shakur, Yoko Ono, The Fugees, Lauryn Hill, Tom Morello (of Rage Against The Machine), Mos Def, Mobb Deep and many more. In addition, Dub Trio spent much of 2010 touring with Hasidic Reggae star Matisyahu as his backing band and sometimes opening act. This collaboration gave them the opportunity to perform at the 2010 Winter Olympics where Matisyahu’s “One Day” was chosen as the theme for the winter games. The band also made numerous public appearances with Matisyahu including television performances on The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien, The Late Show with David Letterman and Jimmy Kimmel Live. They can also be seen on the new Matisyahu DVD Live At Stubb’s, Vol. 2.
At age 15, Stu Brooks traded prep school for art school in order to pursue his calling – music. Soon thereafter, he had a fortuitous meeting with Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and distinguished bassist Prakash John, who instantly recognized Stu’s talent. John acted as a mentor for the budding musician, and it was under his guidance that Brooks truly blossomed. Influenced by a spectrum of rock, metal, jazz, funk, R&B and pop, the wide-eyed Canadian moved to Boston in 1997 to attend Berklee College of Music, where he joined forces with guitarist Dave Holmes. In 2000, the inseparable pair moved to New York City, where they met drummer Joe Tomino, and formed the powerful rhythm section known as Dub Trio.
In addition to their work as a “backing band” Dub Trio has also released three of their own instrumental albums on the ROIR and Ipecac record labels. Dub Trio’s own music is an incendiary mix of instrumental metal and dub styles that is highly experimental, and awe-inspiring.
