A native of Ann Arbor, Michigan, Jason Phelps began playing organ in church as a child. After studying classical piano for a number of years, he attended University of Michigan with a major in Jazz and Improvisational Studies. While there, he began playing bass and had the opportunity to study and perform with musicians such as Donald Walden, Ellen Rowe, and Roland Vasquez.
Jason has been musical director and bass player for bands throughout the Detroit area. He was also the bass player in the house band at the musical hot spot Pickford Live in Tokyo, Japan. He has recorded with the Gospel Music Workshop of America Mass Choir and the University of Michigan Gospel Chorale, and has been a musician at Word of Faith Christian Church in Southfield, Michigan and Triumph Church in Detroit, Michigan. He has performed with many gospel artists, like Donald Lawrence, Kirk Franklin, Kurt Carr, Karen Clark Sheard, Ty Tribbett, Ricky Dillard, Byron Cage, James Fortune, Mary Mary, and Vashawn Mitchell. Jason has also performed with the Sphinx Symphony Orchestra and the University of Michigan Men’s Glee Club.
Jason is currently working as a freelance and studio musician in the Detroit area. He also plays bass at Northridge Church in Plymouth, Michigan, a fast growing church with over 15,000 members.
